The Deafness Support Network (DSN) has been teamed up the Big Lottery Fund and the European Social Fund (ESF) over the last year to help D/deaf people in Cheshire secure employment, a project which offers free support and training to individuals seeking employment, volunteering opportunities, financial advice and life skills.
This is George’s story
George was referred to the New Leaf programme via an initial interview with DSN’s New Leaf coordinator Brian Cadwallader at Chester Deaf Club. He began his journey by working with his personal mentor Helen Barrie and successfully completed a work placement at local farm café in Ellesmere Port. George enjoyed his time there so much, that he still continues to help out, knowing that it is providing him with vital work experience to add to his CV. The staff at the café have been extremely supportive and welcoming and were very impressed with his work ethic.
As part of George’s journey to finding work on the New Leaf Programme, last month, George Warren went to meet Deaf chef Omar Zamir in Blackburn. George wants to get into the catering industry, and over the last 5 months he’s been working hard to build up his experience and knowledge. Being profoundly deaf, his employability mentor Ian Jones thought it would be a good idea for George to meet Omar. George was able to learn about Omar’s journey and about the barriers he’s had to overcome. George found it a valuable experience and was able to gain a great insight into the skills and qualities needed to work in a busy kitchen environment. It has spurred him and he is now even more motivated to find work in a catering.
George is now about to complete a Level 1 certificate in Food Safety & Hygiene, which together with his recent experience, and increased confidence will place him in an excellent position to find work in the New Year.
