I’M HEAR! LOOKING FORWARD TO YEAR 2
After a successful first year, Deafness Support Network’s I’m Hear! Project, funded by BBC Children in Need, is looking forward to support more D/deaf children and families in Year 2. The Project supports deaf children aged 0 – 18 years, with any type of hearing loss, as well as their families, across Cheshire East, Cheshire West and Chester, Halton, Warrington and Wirral. Sessions are arranged to fit in with busy family life and provide a range different communication techniques and are tailored to meet the needs of each individual D/deaf child and their family. This can anything from deaf awareness in the home, clear communication and for families of Deaf children & young people, who use British Sign Language (BSL), the Project can also provide basic BSL sessions. Communication is really important for D/deaf children and young people to integrate within the family and improving communication with D/deaf children and young people is really important as it paves the way for greater inclusion in so many areas of their lives.
Better communication reduces isolation which deaf children and young people often experience.” During the first year, we supported more than 20 D/deaf children/Young People and their families by providing home based practical support to improve communication. Here’s a few quotes from families we’ve supported: “The support sessions have been absolutely brilliant for me, not only in improving communication but also advice and reassurance, I don’t know what I would have done without them…” “My daughter relied on me because I was only one who could communicate with her. It’s great now that more of the family can sign, I don’t feel under so much pressure. Our daughter is happier and more confident now that she can communicate with other members of the family.” “ I have a much clearer understanding of why Sign Language is so important to my daughter. It gives us both a clearer and more meaningful communication”. “My young child and I are much more confident with communication.” During Year 2 we’ll also be hosting family events for all D/deaf children and their families, which will offer a great opportunity for families to support each other and socialise, so please look out for information on the ‘News and Events’ section of DSN’s website.
